When you pick up a rental car, you don’t want stress. Yet at many other rental companies, you might receive a car with the fuel light already on. You’ve just arrived on Samos, don’t know the roads yet, and immediately have to search for a gas station. Not exactly a relaxed start to your holiday.

Some companies use the system: “you get the car with whatever fuel is in it, and return it the same way.” Sounds simple, but try refueling a car to exactly half a tank – or one-fifth – especially just before your flight. It’s nearly impossible and often stressful.

Even stranger: sometimes you’re told the car is “full” for, say, €60 which you have to extra on the spot, but...  you may return it empty. In reality, this usually means you overpay for fuel you won’t even use.
